The Jay Franze Show: Country Music - News | Reviews | Interviews

CMAs Night Preview, Artists With the Most Style, and Country Music News

Jay Franze / Tiffany Mason Episode 179

Awards night pressure meets a changing country music landscape. We break down the CMA slate with honest picks, why Entertainer of the Year is a different beast than Album of the Year, and how a solo-hosting Laney Wilson turned momentum into a movement. From Morgan Wallen’s chart gravity to Ella Langley and Megan Moroney’s six-nomination surge, we track who’s peaking, who’s pushing through, and what it takes to make the leap from “new name” to headliner.

Beyond the trophies, we dig into what’s really shaping the sound: TikTok breakthroughs, streaming playlist economics, live-streamed concerts, and the way synced lyrics and captions change how fans listen. We talk about the rise of crafted online personas, the risk of shorter artist lifespans in a swipe era, and why authenticity still cuts through—especially when artists open up about mental health and sobriety. The conversation stays grounded with a focused review of Ella Langley’s “Choosing Texas,” from lyric arc and imagery to the mix decisions, mandolin ear candy, and Miranda Lambert’s harmony that gives the hook extra lift.

Style gets its due too. We compare onstage looks and what they signal about identity—Laney’s western glam, Megan Moroney’s color eras, Dolly’s timeless sparkle—and how fashion now plays into fan engagement and discoverability. Add a brisk chart rundown, indie gems, and a lively mailbag, and you’ve got a fast, fun, and thoughtful tour through where country is headed next.

Drop your CMA predictions in the comments so we can read them on the next episode.

Jay Franze:

And we are coming at you live. I am Jay Franzi, and uh with me tonight, the Doc to my McFly, my beautiful co-host, Miss Tiffany Mason.

Tiffany Mason:

Hey Jay.

Jay Franze:

And if you are new to the show, this is your source for the latest news, reviews, and interviews. And if you would like to join in, comment, or fire off any questions, please head over to jfranzie.com. Alright, my friend, before we get started, let me tell you about the question of the day. The question of the day provided by James. Who is the artist with the most style? Do not answer it now, Miss Tiffany. Wait, and we will answer it a little later in the show. And if you would like to join our shenanigans and put your comments in the comment section, we will go ahead and read those a little later in the show as well. Alright. CMAs. Let's go ahead and discuss them. Let's talk about it a little bit because they do air tonight.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh.

Jay Franze:

And you know, the disappointing part of that is I usually work them and I'm not. Very disappointing and very sad. I reached out to the team that I usually work with. I wished them luck and I told them I wish I could be there with them. I probably should have made arrangements for that, but I didn't.

Tiffany Mason:

It's because you wanted to be here with me.

Jay Franze:

It is. That's the exact reason. I wanted to be here with you. There's no place else on earth I'd rather be.

Tiffany Mason:

Right.

Jay Franze:

However, the CMA awards they do take place tonight at the Bridgetone Arena in Nashville. So to the team at the Bridgetone, have a good night and be safe. All right, it also broadcasts on ABC tonight. We know you're not watching it now. You're listening to us. However, you can catch it tomorrow on Hulu.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh good.

Jay Franze:

It is the 59th edition, 59. Just a hair older than I.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, wow.

Jay Franze:

So not bad. Do you know who's hosting it this year?

Tiffany Mason:

I do not.

Jay Franze:

You don't? Surprising. Laney Wilson.

Tiffany Mason:

I was gonna guess between Ella Langley and Laney Wilson.

Jay Franze:

50-50 shot then. Laney Wilson, do you know why that's special? Because she's hosted it before. Oh. But this time she's hosting it solo.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, wow.

Jay Franze:

Yes. And she was very nervous about it. She had a little bit of imposter syndrome and did not think she was worthy. But she is fantastic at it. No, she's gonna do a great job. You know what else makes it a little unique? A little unicue.

Tiffany Mason:

Unicue?

Jay Franze:

She is up for six awards herself.

Tiffany Mason:

Mm-hmm. That's crazy.

Jay Franze:

So it's not bad.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, pretty impressive.

Jay Franze:

It's a long way from living in the RV behind the recording studio. Previous episode. Go back and check it out. All right. There are other people up for awards. Somebody high up on the mountain?

Tiffany Mason:

Vince Gill?

Jay Franze:

Yeah. Amy wrote in and told us about that. Legendary singer-songwriter Vince Gill honored for the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tiffany Mason:

There you go, Vince.

Jay Franze:

You tell us what it's like high up on that mountain. We talked about Lainey Wilson, Ella Langley, and Megan Moroni, all the ones that are up for six different categories. Not bad. Zach Topp, five. Oh, just shy of one. Just missed it. And then you've got Entertainer of the Year, Luke Combs, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen, and Laney Wilson. So out of those, who gets entertainer of the year?

Tiffany Mason:

My vote would go to Laney. I love that little segment she does where she picks the cowgirl of the night.

Jay Franze:

Yeah, you've mentioned that.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, I just think that that's so sweet. I love that so much. And I feel like we just need to, you know, encourage our young people as much as possible because I feel like I don't know how they do it. I don't know how they do it with all the social media and the pressure, and I don't know how they do it.

Jay Franze:

Yeah, I would uh it's a tough call. I would probably lean with Laney Wilson myself. However, it's close. You got Morgan Wallen on there, you got Luke Combs.

Tiffany Mason:

Mm-hmm.

Jay Franze:

Cody Johnson, Chris Stableton. I think they're amazing, but I don't think they're the entertainer of the year.

Tiffany Mason:

I've not seen any footage of Cody Johnson on stage, so I do not know. Morgan was pretty good. I mean, when Hannah went, Hannah and Sean, they took some video and shared it, and I was like, okay, that was pretty good. So I I don't know, I haven't seen the stage presence of the other the other ones.

Jay Franze:

Yeah, I mean, especially Morgan Wallen. I mean, again, great. Luke Combs, great. But I think Laney Wilson would have to be my pick. So Laney, please do us proud and bring bring us home a trophy. We'd like to put it right here on the shelf behind us and display it for it.

Tiffany Mason:

We'll display it proudly for you.

Jay Franze:

Right, yeah. All right, album of the year. Megan Moroney, Zach Top, Post Malone, Morgan Wallen, Laney Wilson. Seems like that list is very similar to the to the first one, Entertainer.

Tiffany Mason:

That's drastically different criteria, though.

Jay Franze:

Oh yes.

Tiffany Mason:

And on that one, I think I'd say Morgan Wallen.

Jay Franze:

You know what? Yes. Out of those, I would say Morgan Wallen's got probably the most popularity behind his album.

Tiffany Mason:

Zach Bryan is the next one. Not Zach Topp, right?

Jay Franze:

Zach Topp.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, it is Zach Topp.

Jay Franze:

Yeah. Which isn't bad.

Tiffany Mason:

I don't think he's gotten enough exposure yet, though, to get album of the year.

Jay Franze:

I don't think it was album of the year. I think uh Morgan Wallen, in my opinion, was Album of the Year.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay.

Jay Franze:

Alright, that's two down. If we're gonna be predicting like this, we're gonna have to come back next week and say whether or not we were right. Or we'll just say we were right. That's fine too.

Tiffany Mason:

Let's just say we were right, Doug Jay.

Jay Franze:

All right, next category: female vocalist of the year. Kelsey Ballerini, Miranda Lambert, Ella Langley, Megan Moroney, and Laney Wilson.

Tiffany Mason:

I'm gonna give it to Ella.

Jay Franze:

Ooh, I'm going with Laney Wilson.

Tiffany Mason:

Ella Langley performed with Morgan Wallin and Riley Green. And there's buzz about it right now.

Jay Franze:

So Laney Wilson kicked butt all year long.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, I think Laney Wilson will probably get it, but I would give it to Ella Langley.

Jay Franze:

Okay then. New artist of the year. This is where you probably have better luck saying Ella Langley. Ella Langley, Shabozy, Zaktop, Tucker Wetmore, Stephen Wilson, Jr.

Tiffany Mason:

Say him one more time.

Jay Franze:

Ella Langley. Shaboozie. Zachtop. Tucker Wetmore, Stephen Wilson, Jr.

Tiffany Mason:

I think it's between Laney and Zaktop.

Jay Franze:

No Laney.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh Ella. Ella, sorry, Ella Langley. And yeah. And Zachtop.

Jay Franze:

You gotta pick one.

Tiffany Mason:

Ella Langley.

Jay Franze:

I don't know. I'm going with Zacktop.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay. Now you're making me second guess myself.

Jay Franze:

You should. You should second guess yourself. I like Zack Todd. Not the chicks.

Tiffany Mason:

The girls. Oh.

Jay Franze:

Who are artists? Let's go with performing or presenting. Artists who step on stage, who are the ones that you would look most forward to seeing?

Tiffany Mason:

Probably Megan Moroni. I I still don't love her on the radio, but man, in person, she was so adorable. I loved every step she took, every every outfit she had on, every microphone change, every guitar change. I just loved everything about her in person. So I would think that if she accepted an award or she did a performance, I think her performance would be super cute. So I would go with Megan Moroni. She's one of the people that I would maybe, you know, look for a unique accent on the guitar or a unique hairstyle, or I think she's worn like blue eyeshadow before. Although I did hear her new album coming out, she's all about purple. Her album she just had was blue. So I'd be looking to see if she was wearing any purple. And then I gotta say, Lainey. I mean, I love all of her style. She's got these like maroon-colored leather chaps that she's worn. She's always got like uh their like metal accents with turquoise and stuff on them. She's always got fringes. I think she's got some fun stuff going on with her clothes. So I guess I would look at that. I haven't noticed anything with the gentleman.

Jay Franze:

Well, Megan Moroney, before we get off that, was super nice to my daughter. And we got to sit there and watch her do her sound check and everything, and my daughter got to go up on stage and stand center stage and sing through her microphone. I mean, very, very nice. So, as far as a person goes, amazing. Her music, I really do like it. It's not just because of that. I didn't actually didn't know much about her when I saw her live, but as time went on, I got more and more familiar with her music, and I really do like it. I would be interested to see anything she does. You know what? I really want to see Miranda Lambert. She's actually performing.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay.

Jay Franze:

So I would like to see something she might do. There's gonna be others up there too. The the typical ones you'd would expect are performing, like Kelsey Ballerini's performing. Yeah. Keith Urban's performing.

Tiffany Mason:

There was a funny picture I saw on social media about hairstyles the guys had rocked in the past, and Blake Shelton had like curly hair, and it was like coming in his face a little bit. And Keith Urban's hair was actually pretty long. I was like, okay. I like it better the length he's got it.

Jay Franze:

But I know um Keith Urban had that funky haircut, and Blake had the mullet. Yeah. They were making fun of each other. So do you think these are the new class of artists and the current class of artists are actually going to be stepping out?

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, I definitely feel like there is a new wave coming in, a new generation kind of taking over for sure.

Jay Franze:

How long do you think it will take until Ella Langley or Megan Moroney or even Shabuzi and Zach Topp, those type of artists, till they're the main artists, and you've got the current ones, Chris Stapleton and Morgan Wallen, and those step aside.

Tiffany Mason:

I I my gut is saying three years. What do you think?

Jay Franze:

I hope it's longer than that.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah.

Jay Franze:

I mean, it's like you said when I I said Tim McGraw, and you said, well, he's not relevant anymore. I think he's still one of the most relevant people in country music. I think he is definitely one of the most popular country singers ever. And I don't think that you just step away from that. And Morgan Wallen has proven to be that next level of artist.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah.

Jay Franze:

And if he continues down that path, he will be that next level of artist. And I wouldn't want to see him step aside just because these other people are coming in, like Ella Langley, Megan Moroney, or Zach Topp, Shabuzi, those type of artists. I wouldn't want to see him pushed out because of them. I don't think we're at that point yet.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah. I also think, though, that with like the discovery of TikTok, and we were talking about how artists can have their career skyrocket a lot faster. I wonder if the lifespan is shorter because more artists are coming out of the woodwork from TikTok and social media and YouTube. And maybe that shortens the lifespan of, you know, we're like so instant gratification society that, like, what's new? What's new? What's new? What's new? So I wonder if that will well.

Jay Franze:

If you take that a step further, you got these new artists with six nominations. That's different than it's been years in the past as well. That there's hasn't been artists like new artists specifically that have had six nominations.

Tiffany Mason:

Now, Jay, when does AI take over?

Jay Franze:

Nice. Well, if we just had our first number one hit with AI, uh huh. Maybe next year it'll be new artist of the year.

Tiffany Mason:

I think there will be a category though that is, you know, best AI.

Jay Franze:

Oh, I hope you're right.

Tiffany Mason:

I don't think it's far. It may not be next year, but I bet it's the next year.

Jay Franze:

Bond of a sister for sure.

Tiffany Mason:

I think so.

Jay Franze:

It's up for six nominations. You know, Billy Ray Cyrus is presenting tonight, too.

Tiffany Mason:

Interesting.

Jay Franze:

That was an awful long pause with a frozen face there. I take it you do not approve.

Tiffany Mason:

Well, it's not that I don't approve. I uh like him, like his music, whatever. But his last performance at the White House Well, he's not performing, he's presenting. Okay, well, I guess that's better. Hopefully he can hold it together.

Jay Franze:

People have malfunctions when they when they present.

Tiffany Mason:

Wait, what is his new girlfriend to uh Elizabeth Hurley?

Jay Franze:

She's presenting tonight too.

Tiffany Mason:

Well, probably because they're together. But maybe she's got them all cleaned up and spruced up for public public eyes.

Jay Franze:

Leanne Rhimes is presenting tonight too.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, nice.

Jay Franze:

I would like that. It's kind of cool, like I said, it's tonight beyond Hulu tomorrow, ABC tonight, if you can catch a rerun, because I know you're listening to us right now. But check it out on Hulu.

Tiffany Mason:

I'm just thankful that we can offer them an alternative so that while they are appreciating the show, they know that they can still catch it. Yeah. Yeah.

Jay Franze:

Do us a favor, put in the comments who you think the winners are gonna be.

Tiffany Mason:

Mmm, yeah. Weigh in, crew members.

Jay Franze:

Who do you think the winners will be? And next week we will see who will be right. And if you put your answer in the comment section, you will be included in that running of who can take home the crown for the most predictions.

Tiffany Mason:

Maybe we should say two. Okay, so the first story that I was going to say is that the female present uh representation with Laney Wilson, Ella Langley, and Megan Moroney, they each have six nominations. So maybe we should also wager will it be Laney, Ella, or Megan who comes home with the most awards.

Jay Franze:

Laney.

Tiffany Mason:

I know. And maybe it's a shoe-in.

Jay Franze:

Oh, you can pick.

Tiffany Mason:

That's who I would pick, too.

Jay Franze:

You can't pick her. I picked her.

Tiffany Mason:

No, that's who I'm picking. No, you can't. Okay. Well, oh, fine.

Jay Franze:

You can because we'll we'll go most overall. Okay. So if you want to chime in with all of your predictions as well, go ahead and chime in. Winner gets dinner from the other. Is that fair? Is that a fair thing?

Tiffany Mason:

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Jay Franze:

You buy me dinner. What if a person who raises chickens? What do you call them?

Tiffany Mason:

Chicken razor? Chicken farmer? Chicken tender.

Jay Franze:

But um there you go.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, mom said Ella got two already.

Jay Franze:

Oh, see. No cheating there, Miss Kathy. All right, let's move on to the news.

Tiffany Mason:

All right. The first thing I'm gonna tell you guys about is the 59th annual CMA Awards. So we already talked about it, but the rivals for Entertainer of the Year, Laney Wilson, Luke Combs, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, and Morgan Wallen. So we'll see how that pans out.

Jay Franze:

I would like steak.

Tiffany Mason:

You like steak?

Jay Franze:

Steak for my dinner.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay. I'll have to think of what I'm gonna have. The country star, Cody Johnson and his wife Brandy, welcomed their third child, a son named JC Daniel. Um, and he was born October 21st, 2025. So congratulations to Cody Johnson and wife Brandy.

Jay Franze:

Miss Kathy, you relax there with the seafood comments.

Tiffany Mason:

That's what I was gonna say, Mom.

Jay Franze:

She could choose whatever she wants because she's gonna be the one buying.

Tiffany Mason:

I was stuck between shrimp or crab, mom. You don't want crabs, crab legs.

Jay Franze:

Oh, there is a difference.

Tiffany Mason:

To put the bowl on that story, the mother and baby are reportedly healthy, and the couple are excited to watch their daughters become big sisters.

Jay Franze:

Congratulations.

Tiffany Mason:

Very interesting how to see how it goes down. Okay, next is Kelsey Ballerini. We talked about her. She is heading back to Australia with a new EP in hand. So the multi-platinum artist Kelsey Ballerini is returning for her first major headline tour there since 2019. She's releasing a six-song EP titled Mount Pleasant. The EP includes a new single, I Sit in Parks, which I thought was okay. It was it was a song. And Bellarini says the work reflects a chapter of self-examination and growth, which I did not get from that song. I did not listen to it all the way through. I did not want to.

Jay Franze:

She recorded her first or wrote her first song at 12 years old.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh wow.

Jay Franze:

She was a youngin'. She reminds me, or or shall I say, Josie Saul reminds me of her.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, sure. Okay. Yeah. Listening to it, it made me think of uh like I need to listen to it a couple more times, but it makes me think of another country song. I think that's another reason why I didn't like it. Because when the chorus gets ready to hit, I think something else is gonna be sung and then it's not because I realize it's not the same song. Or you know what I'm saying? Like I'm expecting different words, and I'm like, oh, you copycatted the melody or whatever. Okay, well, Mr. Tucker Wetmore, he is sharing his big CMA night with his mom. Rising country artist Tucker Wetmore opened up about his first CMA nomination and debut performance, and he plans to hit the red carpet with his mom by his side. Wetmore's debut album, What Not To, launched major breakout this year, and now he's stepping into the national spotlight. Like Tucker Wetmore, like his music, but we did not pick him for any of the awards.

Jay Franze:

It's because he doesn't deserve them.

Tiffany Mason:

Whoa. Whoa. Hate mail.

Jay Franze:

Well, I mean, put him up against Laney Wilson. I don't think he's ready.

Tiffany Mason:

So nope, agreed. Hasn't earned it yet. Elle Langley, with six CMA nominations this year, she will be performing her new song, Choosing Texas, at the show. Wish I was there. She says she hopes to the audience feels the longing. She credits her faith and her team's work for getting her ready for this career. Milestone. I would love to be there. This is a fun song that just came on my radar, and I'd love to see her performing live.

Jay Franze:

She's got to have some sort of like tough streak to her for sure. She got her start performing in biker bars.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, wow. I can see that.

Jay Franze:

She's gotta be tough.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah. Well, she performed with Morgan Wallen or uh Rather Green, and they were showing it on social media, and she had a cute little outfit on that was a little risque. So I think she's got a little natty streak in there somewhere.

Jay Franze:

You know why?

Tiffany Mason:

You know why you can't get you to bite the bait?

Jay Franze:

Bite the bait? No, that's a weird way of saying that. However, no, you know why?

Tiffany Mason:

Take the bait, take the bait.

Jay Franze:

I moved to Nashville and started my career in Nashville in 1999. Okay, that's the year she was born.

Tiffany Mason:

I was gonna say, is that the year she was born? Oh no.

Jay Franze:

So, you know, she's pretty and all, but nope, sorry, just stand across the room.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah. All right. Well, Luke Combs has shared his pick for Entertainment of the Year, and it is not himself. He said he would vote for Cody Johnson in that category. His comment highlights how tight the field is this year and how peers are rooting for one another. It's nice when you hear about camaraderie.

Jay Franze:

Well, they're friends. Yeah, you know. All right, fine. Move on. What do I know? Screw the fact that they're friends.

Tiffany Mason:

I just didn't know what to say and reply.

Jay Franze:

They are friends. He helped him out. That's how they get their start. No. No, just shit. This is a show where we talk to each other. Sorry. Didn't mean to spark conversation.

Tiffany Mason:

How dare you? Yeah, I did not know that they were friends. So that's interesting to learn.

Jay Franze:

I don't know if we are.

Tiffany Mason:

We are. We are. Okay. So a couple of weeks ago, we reported that Todd Snyder was on tour and he had been assaulted and then he went into the hospital. Well, unfortunately, on November 14th, he actually passed away after a brief illness at age 59, leaving behind a legacy in the alternative country world. So that's kind of sad.

Jay Franze:

Kind of sad. It's very sad.

Tiffany Mason:

Mm-hmm. Hate to see a good singer-songwriter go.

Jay Franze:

Anybody.

Tiffany Mason:

Anybody. Anybody. Sorry.

Jay Franze:

Especially singer-songwriters.

Tiffany Mason:

I didn't mean to be insensitive.

Jay Franze:

Again.

Tiffany Mason:

Again. There she goes again.

Jay Franze:

Walking down the street. Do a diddy diddy. Dumb diddy do.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay. Well, Riley Green is opening up about his nat nom his CMA nomination. Wow, English is tricky tonight. Alaborn Alabama born.

Jay Franze:

Slow down, girl. Slow down.

Tiffany Mason:

Slow down. Alabama born, Riley Green. It's reflecting on his four-time CMA nomination and upcoming performance at the awards tonight. He and Ella Langley are both nominated for single, song, and music video of the year for their collaboration. Very nice. And I had talked about it that they were performing it together. And here it is.

Jay Franze:

He's a talented man.

Tiffany Mason:

I did not realize how good looking he is until this lady was like, You're going to CMA Fest. Oh my gosh, Riley Green is gonna be there. He's so good looking. Blah blah blah.

Jay Franze:

That would explain the TV show. He had his own TV show.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh. Because the ladies like to look at him.

Jay Franze:

And if that's not enough for a good looking man to have his own TV show, he was also the quarterback on his college football team.

Tiffany Mason:

So things are adding up. Things are adding up.

Jay Franze:

You know what? We don't like Riley Green after all.

Tiffany Mason:

I mean, speak for yourself, Jay. And he's from Bama. Okay, he's probably got some kind of cute accent, too.

Jay Franze:

Let's go with cute, yes.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay, well, we're talking about all the Zach's and Luke's and Bryant's and all the things, right? Zach Bryant. So he has actually been sober for two months, and he is being candid about his mental health. So he said, I haven't touched alcohol for nearly two months. Something I had to do for my own personal clarity. He wrote, I needed to see the world objectively. So he was having like some anxiety or panic, and he was finding himself constantly reaching for alcohol to soothe himself. And so he recognized this is not healthy and decided to take a break from it. And he said, I just want to say that it's okay to be weak at times and to need help. He concluded, God speed everybody. I pray this helps someone. And so I feel like this is an appropriate time to say if you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse, contact the S A M H S A helpline at 1-800-662 help.

Jay Franze:

Say the phone number one more time.

Tiffany Mason:

1-800-662-H E-L-P, spelling the word help.

Jay Franze:

Very nice.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah.

Jay Franze:

It is that time of year.

Tiffany Mason:

It is that time of year, actually. Yeah, that's true. And I mean, we've been talking about how Nashville is seeing a decline in drinking. I don't know if Nashville is, but country music as a as a population supposedly is cutting down on their drinking. So, you know, good for him that he's recognizing the problem and then just being open about it. I think I think what we're seeing with social media is a more real side of a lot of these artists. Even uh Jodi Messina, she's all over social media. And I'm like, okay, that's kind of funny that old school country, or not old school, but you know, a couple generations back is having to embrace social media and utilizing it. And you get to see a very real side of them, her and her kids. And she was doing something the other day where she was doing like somersaults or something. I was like, okay, girlfriend can still like get down because you know, she ain't a spring chicken no more. Neither am I. So either way, but yeah, I think with social media, we're seeing these these artists have to almost become influencers.

Jay Franze:

You, my friend, will always be young.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, oh, Jay, can we get that on a t-shirt?

Jay Franze:

Don't get carried away. In another year or two, you won't be able to read it.

Tiffany Mason:

True story, so I'll have to get readers, put readers on just to see what you wrote on my shirt.

Jay Franze:

I'll sign it with a Sharpie.

Tiffany Mason:

Well, that leads me into the last thing I was gonna tell everybody about the crew members and UJ.

Jay Franze:

And me. And you think I'm included.

Tiffany Mason:

Is that uh an analysis shows how streaming services, playlists, and live streams are increasingly influencing the sound, reach, and business of modern country music. The shift means artists are adapting as audience engagement moves beyond traditional radio, which is like I was saying, with social media, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube. And last week, I think it was we talked about how streaming platforms are changing user behavior with throwing up captions, which I do that in Apple Music where I click on the little caption so it'll come up and tell me what the words are. So I can sing along.

Jay Franze:

Shall we move on to the question of the day?

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, what was the question of the day, Jay?

Jay Franze:

I'm afraid to read it.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh I'm question of the day.

Jay Franze:

Who's the most stylish? Stylish? Stylish artist? Who is the artist with the most style?

Tiffany Mason:

That is such a tongue booster. It's hysterical.

Jay Franze:

Who is the artist with the most style? James, you're fired. And we don't have a button for you, but I'm telling you, if we did, you would be gone. Who is the artist with the most style?

Tiffany Mason:

Well, you normally give me an opportunity. I'm gonna take it. I'm just gonna say Laney Wilson. Freaking love that kid. Love that girl. She is just shown up in the most amazing, bedazzled. Nashville country girl rodeo. God, I just I love it. I love it. That's that's probably the reason why I follow her. I want to see what she's wearing in the next. Oh, and she's got that uh she's got one of those cowboy hats where the top is like a 10-gallon cowboy hat, isn't that what they called it or something? 10-gallon hat. 10-gallon hat. She's got one of those. Like, I just love seeing what the heck she's gonna show up in.

Jay Franze:

Nice. Not bad, not a bad choice. Not who I'm going with, but not a bad choice.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay, who are you going with? Tell us in the beginning. Just do it.

Jay Franze:

In the beginning?

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Jay Franze:

The very first person that came to my mind was Prince.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, okay. I would agree with that.

Jay Franze:

He wears a coffin like no other.

Tiffany Mason:

Ah, Jay.

Jay Franze:

Just a joke. Anybody, it's just a joke. His fashion sense was impeccable. All right, moving on before I get fired. Jay, you're fired.

Tiffany Mason:

You know where hate mail goes, right, guys?

Jay Franze:

Hate mail goes to Jay at JFrancy.com. I got it. I deserve it. Oh, all right. Moving on. Megan. Megan agrees with Miss Tiffany. She says Laney Wilson.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh yeah.

Jay Franze:

Nobody rides bell bottoms better than Laney. Chris says Morgan Wallen. The mullet movement. Is it really? I mean, yeah, and Billy Ray Cyrus and Blake Shelton. Yeah. Are we saying the mullet is a resurgence of the mullet?

Tiffany Mason:

I think it's a resurgence. I do.

Jay Franze:

Alright.

Tiffany Mason:

I don't think Blake Shelton brought it. He had it, but I don't think anybody imitated him.

Jay Franze:

Okay. Evan says jelly roll. He's unapologetically himself, and somehow every tattoo becomes part of his outfit. Okay.

Tiffany Mason:

When there's that many, I don't think you can avoid it not becoming part of your outfit.

Jay Franze:

All right, Laurie, I do agree with you though. She says Carrie Underwood.

Tiffany Mason:

She was another person that came to mind.

Jay Franze:

I will tell you, we mentioned CMAs and working them in the past. I was in the parking garage getting ready to go into the arena, and Carrie Underwood was coming in. And she was walking in with her handlers and they had two full racks of clothing.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh yeah.

Jay Franze:

Two full racks. Uh-huh. And obviously she couldn't go through all those clothes, but she wanted to be prepared in case she changed her mind.

Tiffany Mason:

Well, you never know. The wind is gonna blow. And you know, I get up in the morning and while I'm showering, I start thinking to myself Am I preppy, Tiffany? Am I Sporty Spice? Um what was another one I came up with?

Jay Franze:

I'm afraid to see where this is going.

Tiffany Mason:

Uh, there's one more. I can't think of what it is right now.

Jay Franze:

More of your personalities.

Tiffany Mason:

And yeah, yeah, it's it's all my personalities. And sometimes just lazy. Yeah, sometimes just lazy, just I don't even care what I put on today. Like if it matches fine, and if not, whatever.

Jay Franze:

Sean, please chime in in the comment section and let us know which personality you like best. Which personality did you marry? And which one are the two personalities you ended up with? It's like the crazy sisters, not you, Jenny. The others.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay, so the other thing about Carrie Underwood. So I agree, you never know how the wind is gonna blow, and she may be like, No, I'm not wearing that. I'm definitely feeling something blue, and goes with it. What also, what also, Jay? If she shows up and somebody's already working red carpet, they've got what she was gonna wear. You can't show up and what everybody else has on, so she's gotta be prepared, Jay.

Jay Franze:

She's gotta be prepared for another oven. Got it.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay, that's right.

Jay Franze:

Um, moving on. Jacob says Hardy. He says it's all about the flannels, the glasses, and the attitude.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah. I was gonna say the glasses, yeah.

Jay Franze:

Haley says Cody Johnson.

Tiffany Mason:

I gotta watch more of this guy. Like, he's not on my radar enough. I only know one song by him. I probably know two songs by him, but that's all I know.

Jay Franze:

Trey, I'm gonna allow this only because it's probably the one time that this fits into our show here. He says Beyonce.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, okay.

Jay Franze:

I can see that as part of this show.

Tiffany Mason:

We'll allow it this one time.

Jay Franze:

Don't let it happen again. Samantha says Keith Urban. I don't see it.

Tiffany Mason:

No. I'll tell you who else. George Strait and those jeans, those Wranglers. Mm-hmm. Mm-mm. Okay, whoa. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mom, you got me on that, right? You got me on that, Mom.

Jay Franze:

Brian W. Just saying W, because this could very well be Brian White. Oh says Shania Twain. Brian White and Shania Twain have duetted in the past and they are friendly, and that would explain why he might use Shania Twain. Yeah. Brian W, if you are Brian White, please let us know. Rita. Rita says Megan Moroney.

Tiffany Mason:

Yes. Mm-hmm. I loved everything she wore at her concert. And I said I'd like to see her at the CMAs.

Jay Franze:

Joel says Luke Combs. Vanessa says Dirk Spentley. Derek Spentley. He knows how to wear a hockey jersey. Laying on the ice.

Tiffany Mason:

Let it go, Jay. Gina.

Jay Franze:

Gina says Zach Bryan without the T. She actually says without the T. Gina, you are my new best friend.

Tiffany Mason:

Way to go, Gina. Way to call me out.

Jay Franze:

Marcus says Dolly Parton.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah. She was the other one.

Jay Franze:

Glitter, glamour, and greatness.

Tiffany Mason:

Mm-hmm.

Jay Franze:

I can go with that. Harper says Post Malone. Caleb says Miranda Lambert. Wyatt says Tim McGraw, really? Jeans and a t-shirt. How is that? No. Olivia says Taylor Swift. I can see that. Carter says Chris Stapleton. Amber says Dan and Shay. Kyle F. I don't know if this is Kyle Fields or not. If it is, thank you for being here. Kyle Fields, previous guest of the show, Kyle F. Don't know for sure. However, says Willie Nelson. He says bandana chic.

Tiffany Mason:

That's awesome. Bandana and braids chic.

Jay Franze:

And then Tina says Luke Bryan.

Tiffany Mason:

So wait a minute. Uh when we had our Texas, our Texas Roadhouse up in Minnesota, went to conference, and Kent Taylor, the founder of Texas Roadhouse, would always go all out and we'd have themes and like it was really like over the top all the time. One of the things that they gave out at one of the conferences was like this headband that was a bandana, and then it had Willie Nelson braids that hung down. Nice. It's awesome.

Jay Franze:

I would like to see you in that. I'm sure you still have it, so make it happen next week.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, yeah. Okay, next week.

Jay Franze:

Tina says Luke Bryan, those tight jeans.

Tiffany Mason:

If he moved a little bit better in them, I could get down. But okay, fine. White boy can't dance.

Jay Franze:

Jerome, that's a name we have not heard here before. But Jerome says jelly roll. His style is tattoos and kindness. Alright, James, the James. The James that provided the question of the day says Prince. There we go. I'll take that. June. June says Elton John.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, yes.

Jay Franze:

Here we go again. Jacob.

Tiffany Mason:

Here we go again.

Jay Franze:

Jacob. But it's J-A-A-P. But Jacob says Brian Ferry. I don't know who this person is, and I'm assuming he's expecting me not to because he's included a link to YouTube. Song Let's Stick Together. Holly. Hi, Holly. Holly says share.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, good call. Yes.

Jay Franze:

Miss Kathy. It's gotta be in the blood. Miss Kathy says Ella Langley, Carrie Underwood, and Dolly Parton. Those were my picks. He's gotta have three.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, yeah. Jay, we cannot be pigeonholed into one answer. Okay? We have many opinions and must share them all. We cannot narrow it down.

Jay Franze:

Alright. Tea and smoke music.

Tiffany Mason:

They've been here.

Jay Franze:

Thank you for coming back. Says nowadays everyone seems to just wear underwear on stage.

Tiffany Mason:

That is fair.

Jay Franze:

With a little laughing emoji.

Tiffany Mason:

Who has the best lingerie? Maybe that should have been the question. Who wore it best?

Jay Franze:

Alright. And we're gonna go ahead and end on this one.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay.

Jay Franze:

Maya Project Music says the last one to be stylish was Annie Lennox. And then Freddie Mercury for Male Artists.

Tiffany Mason:

Freddie Mercury came to mind when somebody said Elton John.

Jay Franze:

None of the current artists out there, none, unless you believe porn is a style. This is just my opinion.

Tiffany Mason:

I mean, they're not wrong.

Jay Franze:

So there you go.

Tiffany Mason:

They're not wrong. So let's start with Megan Moroni debuting spot number 10, six months later. I think this song's pretty cute. What doesn't kill you calls you six months later.

Jay Franze:

I do like that one as well.

Tiffany Mason:

It's very clever. Okay, Tucker Wetmore. We talked about him. He's not winning the awards, but he was nominated, which is still an honor. He is hanging tight at spot number nine with three, two, one. Spot number eight. It is Parker McCollum with what kind of man? I'll tell you the kind of man that likes the number eight.

Jay Franze:

I thought you were gonna let it go this way. I really did. I thought it was gone.

Tiffany Mason:

No, Jay Franzi. Okay, spot number seven, holding steady at spot number seven, Parmely with Cowgirl.

Jay Franze:

Nice.

Tiffany Mason:

And spot number six, Mr. Riley Green himself with Don't Mind If I Do, featuring Ella Langley.

Jay Franze:

Nice. I like when two of the new ones get together to do a duet.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, I do too. Um, I'm proud of them for being quote unquote new and collabing in the public eye. Like you're saying, but yeah.

Jay Franze:

But differently.

Tiffany Mason:

But differently.

Jay Franze:

Like I said it, but in your voice. I get it. It works out.

Tiffany Mason:

I had to say it so people would understand. Yeah, yeah.

Jay Franze:

No, because it was it was a tough one.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay, we got a lot of people holding their place. Laney Wilson, spot number five, somewhere over Laredo.

Jay Franze:

It is a good song. I do love it. It's been around for quite a while. Long time on the chart.

Tiffany Mason:

Long time on the chart. We love you long time, Laney. Long time on the chart. Whoa.

Jay Franze:

Well, hate mail goes to Tiffany. Tiffany is.

Tiffany Mason:

I just feel like there should be filler words like it's been on the charts a long time. Instead of on the chart long time. Long time on the chart. That's what it was. Oh okay. Well, maybe you should have crabs. Crab legs when I win. Yes. Morgan Wallins in spot number four with I Got Better. Big fan. Love me some Morgan Wallins.

Jay Franze:

You've got gone.

Tiffany Mason:

Yep. I got better.

Jay Franze:

You don't correct his grammar.

Tiffany Mason:

It's more fun to pick on you.

Jay Franze:

Yeah, that's true. Spot number three.

Tiffany Mason:

He doesn't care. He's like, whatever she said. Who cares? Okay, spot number three. Jackson Dean. What happens to Batsy? Nice. Every time it comes on. I tell Hannah every time. I just, I don't, I don't like it. I don't know. I can't. I can't. Are you ready, Jay? Spot number two. Chase Matthew with Darlin. And spot number one. Luke Combs. Back in the saddle. And I'm impressed how long that song's been around.

Jay Franze:

Really?

Tiffany Mason:

And hanging on the charts, yeah.

Jay Franze:

I think it went up the charts pretty quickly. I don't think it's been around that that long.

Tiffany Mason:

Like a month.

Jay Franze:

Like a month. Talk about the TikTok world, my friend. Holy cow, I can't believe you just said that.

Tiffany Mason:

How long should it stay on the charts? I mean, cheaper.

Jay Franze:

Like weeks upon weeks upon weeks.

Tiffany Mason:

Well, we got weeks, right now.

Jay Franze:

Close to a year. Not a month. Oh. All right. Okay. Let's move on to the indies. You know what? And let's do this. Let's start at number 10.

Tiffany Mason:

That's a good idea. Let's do it. Okay.

Jay Franze:

Every once in a while I have one of those.

Tiffany Mason:

Spot number 10, Life's a Highway by Soul Circus Cowboy with Andy Griggs. Nice. Okay, spot number nine. Single of the year. Maddie True. Holy cow. True Blue Music. Because I was thinking of the CMAs and like, okay, what's the single of the year? And then I was like, oh, that was the title of the song. So Single of the Year by Maddie True. True Blue Music. Spot number eight, perfume on my jersey by Caleb Lathrop. That's a cute song. You gotta go check it out. From you. Oh, being so tough. Perfume on jersey, blood on a jersey. I get what you did there.

Jay Franze:

Yeah, the jerseys.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, yeah. Okay.

Jay Franze:

Also call them sweaters.

Tiffany Mason:

Really?

Jay Franze:

Yeah, that was an old time thing. Used to call them sweaters.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh. Okay.

Jay Franze:

Sorry. Move on to your charts. Yeah. Your rinky dne little number thing.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah. My little number thing. We're on num little number number seven.

Jay Franze:

Yeah.

Tiffany Mason:

And the song is said no redneck ever.

Jay Franze:

Said no Tiffany Ever.

Tiffany Mason:

A Aaron Goodvin.

Jay Franze:

Okay, that's enough of that.

Tiffany Mason:

Fine. Aaron Goodvan. Can you take the fun out of it? You know what, Jay? I wish you would go. But the song in number six is Wish You Wouldn't Go. Kendall Mesh. I could tell you were focusing on something, but I didn't know what. Just dying to say it.

Jay Franze:

Waiting. One of my terms.

Tiffany Mason:

Spot number five is being held by Billy Joe Jones with the song Turquoise and Silver.

Jay Franze:

No E.

Tiffany Mason:

No E.

Jay Franze:

However, Get Joe Records has an E.

Tiffany Mason:

Very observant of you. So Billy Joe Jones has no E and no name Joe. But the record label is Get Joe Records. And that Joe has the E has an E. Okay.

Jay Franze:

Just want to make it clear for everybody.

Tiffany Mason:

Thank you. Spot number four is the song read by Jet Jergensmeyer. No? Okay. Spot number three is Hell That I Call Home by Porter Martin. No comma.

Jay Franze:

No comma. We've established no comma.

Tiffany Mason:

Wit, checked it out. It's Hell That I Call Home because there's more words before it. Okay. Spot number two. I don't know how to say goodbye. Bang, bang, boom, boom. By Dwight Yukam and Post Malone.

Jay Franze:

That's a very weird way of saying goodbye. I'm going to start doing that. The end of conversations. Bang, bang, boom, boom.

Tiffany Mason:

Well, I think it's like bang bang. Boom boom. You know, like a I don't know. Yeah, that's interesting. I don't like it.

Jay Franze:

No.

Tiffany Mason:

But what I do like, well, really what you like is spot number one.

Jay Franze:

Hey, Miss Kathy.

Tiffany Mason:

Hide and Go Cheat by Eric Lee Beddingfield.

Jay Franze:

What?

Tiffany Mason:

It was very anticlimatic for me. I'm sure you've heard that before.

Jay Franze:

I hear it all the time. I'll be the first one to tell you. Because I just don't get things done. It's alright though. It's all the same feeling to me. Ooh. Ooh, we're going to move on.

Tiffany Mason:

We gotta move on.

Jay Franze:

We've got to move on. You know why? Because we're gonna talk about a girl that was born in 1999.

Tiffany Mason:

I love that that's so depressing to you.

Jay Franze:

Yeah, very depressing. So we're gonna talk about her and our artist spotlight tonight. And Miss Tiffany's selection. If you would like to make a selection, if you would like us to spotlight an artist or review a song, go ahead and let us know in the comments or submit it. You can send it to Jay at JFranzy.com. If you are a musician, you have a song of your own, please let us know. We will review that as well. But right now, tonight is Ella Langley. So we're gonna go ahead and talk about her a little bit. Miss Tiffany, what is the name of the song that you have chosen?

Tiffany Mason:

Choosing Texas.

Jay Franze:

Choosing Texas. I think it's also fair to point out that Miss Ella Langley plays guitar as well as sings. I always think that's impressive when the vocalist can also play an instrument.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, I think it's very much like chewing gum and walking at the same time.

Jay Franze:

Well, if you're gonna do it at the same time, then we're really gonna be impressed. However, as much as I'm impressed with the fact that she can play guitar and probably plays live, she's not playing on our record. Yeah. And she's probably not plugged in when she plays live. Unfortunately, that's the way that's the way it is.

Tiffany Mason:

I hate learning that. I hate that. It's just like I know that the reality shows, like the real housewives or whatever, I know that they're like staged, and I know other things are staged, but I like to play dumb and I like to watch the show and think that it's real.

Jay Franze:

So then when couldn't have been a better statement ever.

Tiffany Mason:

Ignorance is a bliss. I like just watching it and thinking it's real. And so I hate when I go, that was probably staged. Oh, that was staged.

Jay Franze:

You know, my wife hates watching movies with me and stuff when I can point out the the flaws in the production. Or if we're listening to music, I see there was a bad edit. Or that was that was punched in. But yeah, I think it's also important to mention that the song had some co-writers on it, one of them of note.

Tiffany Mason:

Was it Jay Franzi?

Jay Franze:

It was not Jay Franzi. It'd be nice if it was. I could use that payday. No, it was not me, but it was Miss Miranda Lambert.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, cool.

Jay Franze:

You know what else is special about Miss Miranda Lambert being part of the writing of that song? One guess. Nope. She sang background vocals on the song.

Tiffany Mason:

Cool.

Jay Franze:

And she's not a man.

Tiffany Mason:

I know it must have been an instrument.

Jay Franze:

All right. Ella and Miss Miranda also produced the song.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, cool.

Jay Franze:

So I also like that.

Tiffany Mason:

Uh-huh.

Jay Franze:

So let's talk about the song a little bit. Let's talk about the story.

Tiffany Mason:

Let's bust their chops. We'll tell them how it works.

Jay Franze:

I think lyrically it's a strong song. I think it's your typical modern country heartbreak song. Which it's good. I like songs like that. I think they have feeling, but this this particular song has a a nice arc to it. You have a story. So to me, that was good. How did you feel about the lyrics themselves?

Tiffany Mason:

The lyrics themselves were great. So in the first line, she mentions Abilene, Texas, which I like because I feel like we always hear about like Austin or Houston. And so it was nice to hear about a town that's not brought up very often. He is from Texas, and the singer is quote unquote Tennessee. And she thinks that she's got him convinced that he's in love with Tennessee. But then they go back to Abilene and he falls in love with Texas. It's another woman that is Texas. So I love the imagery of him being from Texas and falling back in love with Texas, but really it's not the state that she's talking about, it's the person that she's talking about. And I just thought it was just kind of a funny side note that in the song they talk about Amarillo by morning. And that has come up so many times on our question of the day that I thought that that was kind of funny. Like I just loved all the little clever you know tidbits that she threw in there.

Jay Franze:

Yeah, it does have strong imagery, but I would say it takes it a step further if you talk about the Texas-Tennessee rival.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah.

Jay Franze:

Country music, that's a big thing where Texas country versus Nashville country are usually a bit of a rival to it. I always like to think in good spirits, right? Good to have some competitions, friendly competition.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah.

Jay Franze:

But Texas is typically known for the more live music, where Nashville was always known for the more recorded music.

Tiffany Mason:

Mm-hmm. Pretty boy music. Yeah.

Jay Franze:

There you go. Did you say pretty boy music?

Tiffany Mason:

Pretty boy music. They're all pretty boys.

Jay Franze:

Wow. All right.

Tiffany Mason:

You know, where like you go to Texas and they're like, you know, ringling some cows, because they cowboys down there. That's a little bit more tough. Like Gretchen was talking about.

Jay Franze:

All right. Back to the song. Okay. I think it was strong in general. It had a relatable concept. The song itself lyrically was good, but if we go into the the music of it, I think the production was good. We talk about critical listening when it comes to listening for production value. I think the song was balanced. I think it had a good spatial image. One thing I liked about the actual production of the song was the instrumentation moved. It didn't stay static. So a lot of times what will happen is when somebody's mixing a song, if they put, say this particular song has a steel guitar and it started off on the left side of the stereo image, but later it was on the right side of the stereo image. And then later again was back on the left side of the stereo image, which is cool. It adds interest. However, there is a downside to it. If you were watching somebody on stage and say that steel player was on the left side of the stage as you were watching it, that steel player would not move. They're sitting down and their instrument is on a stand on the floor. It's not like they walk across the stage or anything. So if you are a purist, you're not going to like the fact that the steel guitar moved. An electric guitar, and the player could walk across the stage, but even if they were to walk across the stage, so if you're a purist, you might not like that. But as far as ear candy goes, I thought that was pretty good. And as far as ear candy goes, there was an instrument I wasn't expecting to hear, and that was the mandolin that came in in the second verse. It was kind of interesting, gave a little bit of ear candy to that. So I did like that as well. And I did like Miranda Lambert's background vocals. So I did too. They blended very well. Uh-huh. Because Ella had a very smooth voice. And Miranda's got that raspiness to her, and the two kind of blended and made the background vocal stand out a little bit more.

Tiffany Mason:

I agree.

Jay Franze:

So I thought that was I liked it a lot.

Tiffany Mason:

I don't know. I got kind of a 90s vibe from it. You know how like um some of the music we've likened to uh Garth Brooks, and I felt like this just felt like a little 90s to me, which felt familiar and nostalgic, and I liked it.

Jay Franze:

Yeah, I think it had that feel to it. I mentioned that you had Ella and you had Miranda Lambert producing, but you also had Ben West was a producer on the record as well. Ben West is probably your typical producer that you're gonna find. He's not an artist performing, he is probably the main producer, where the other two probably helped out. And then Dave Kloss is um the mix engineer. Always good to point them out when we know who they are. Works for me. Alright. Shall we move on?

Tiffany Mason:

I think we shall mail back.

Jay Franze:

Do we need a jingle? I don't know. Maybe we do.

Tiffany Mason:

It doesn't need one. I'll just say it every week. We have we have one. Tiffany. You're fired. Tiffany, you're fired. Tiffany, you're fired. Goodbye. Triple? Triple? I got I got I got punished three times for that.

Jay Franze:

Carly says, love the energy that you two bring. She was talking about me. She included you just for the sake of it. She didn't want you to feel most out.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh yeah. And Tiffany.

Jay Franze:

Jamie says, Tiffany, your laugh alone boosts my mood. Oh, please. M. M.

Tiffany Mason:

Just the letter? Just as M.

Jay Franze:

This is the last name, but it says M.

Tiffany Mason:

Who goes by just a symbol? Prince? Was it Prince? Prince. Yeah.

Jay Franze:

Do you know why you went by the symbol?

Tiffany Mason:

I do not.

Jay Franze:

Because he wanted out of his record deal and they wouldn't allow him out of his record deal. So he changed his name to a symbol so that nobody could pronounce it.

Tiffany Mason:

Good for him. There you go.

Jay Franze:

All right. M says Country Radio is sleeping on half of the new artists that are coming out. Your show is the only one giving them the proper spotlight. Keep pushing. Yay. Hannah. Hannah with an H. Thank you. Again. We love having you here. We are overdue for a country artist who doesn't sound like he's trying to audition for a truck commercial. Okay.

Tiffany Mason:

I think we have that, don't we, with Zach Bryan?

Jay Franze:

Not getting involved. Not getting involved. Kelsey. Kelsey from Louisville, Kentucky. He can figure out her last name and the fact that she lives at 836 Main Street. Anyway. She says y'all. Which is funny to me because there's a water tower here that used to say Florence Mall.

Tiffany Mason:

Yeah, it just says all.

Jay Franze:

Florence Mall, but the water tower looks like it's part of the mall, is apparently on city property. So you couldn't advertise. So they changed it to say Florence Yall. And it has become such a staple of the city that the baseball team, the minor league baseball team, they changed the name from Florence Freedom to Florence Yalls. And the Water Tower is their mascot.

Tiffany Mason:

That's cool.

Jay Franze:

So Kelsey, I get it. Thank you. Y'all have the cleanest audio out there. Seriously. My headphones, thank you. Thank Miss Tiffany. Virtually you. Tracy. Tracy. It says T-Bird. So Tracy, T-Bird, says J Bird. Oh, mercy me. People are killing me. It says, You've got this calm but tough vibe going. Like you could host a show and then break up a bar fight. I give you respect. Let me know if you ever want to leave your wife.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, oh, if you want to go hide and go cheat.

Jay Franze:

If I want to go hide and go cheat, she doesn't want to hide. Let's do it.

Tiffany Mason:

I think she's pegged you correctly though.

Jay Franze:

Tracy. Hmm. Come on, girl. What do you wear? Let's just get to it. Sorry, babe. I if you're awake, it's just a joke. I hear the broom of it.

Tiffany Mason:

I love how you're always looking up into the ceiling like she's a ghost.

Jay Franze:

It feels like it. Sometimes she she pops up. It's like Beetlejuice. Wife, wife, wife.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh my God. Stop. What's the next piece of mail?

Jay Franze:

Gene. Gene. It's from Pittsburgh. I like Pittsburgh. Gene says, we need more storytelling songs and fewer checklist songs. Song lyrics matter. Song lyrics matter. Sarah, Sarah with an H. Can I say the chemistry between you two feels effortless? You can say trust me. All sorts of effort going on over here.

Tiffany Mason:

I say it's effortless.

Jay Franze:

Oh, backroads Brandon.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh.

Jay Franze:

Jay, I'd listen to you talk about vocal chains all day long. You need to nerd out more often. Okay. Let me tell you about this preamp. It's called Avalon. The knobs are nice. They're kind of rigid, but they move smooth. Is that working for you? Yeah? Okay. I don't think so. Let's move on to the compressor.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh God.

Jay Franze:

Thank you, I guess. Omar says labels need to stop manufacturing TikTok moments and start signing people who can sing. Shall I say it? No autotune. There, I said it. Oh, you're my new friend.

Tiffany Mason:

But as we learned, the industry forces auto tune on stuff that doesn't need auto-tune.

Jay Franze:

That's true. Melissa. Melissa says, Tiffany, you've got the best mix of warmth and wit.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, thank you.

Jay Franze:

She doesn't know you very well. Honky Tonk Historian. Not a bad name. My wife would like that.

Tiffany Mason:

Uh-huh. That's cool.

Jay Franze:

Artists need to bring br bring back.

Tiffany Mason:

Bring it bring it back, Jay. Bring it back.

Jay Franze:

Artists need to bring back proper album sequencing. People actually do listen to the album in order. Let me tell you, that little project I just released, my wife hounded me about the order of those songs. I said, Well, that's not the order they belong in. She's like, it's the order they're going in. She goes, It tells a story. You gotta go in the order of the story. So she weighed in and she got her way. Of course she didn't. She got her way. But yes, I agree with you. The thing I don't like that I noticed through this process was once you upload your songs to the DSPs, there's no transition between the songs. One plays stops, the next one immediately starts. Part of the art of mastering a record was how much space you put between the songs. So if you're going to go from a fast song to a slow song, you put a little bit more space, give your mind a little bit of a chance to transition into it, you don't get that transition. Now you could do a workaround, you could put extra space at the end of your song. It's really not the way you should be doing it. If the distribution platform is always saying, if you gave the option of allowing us to type in a certain number of seconds that we could put between the songs, that would be a fantastic use of your platform.

Tiffany Mason:

Well, I think that all the time when I'm listening to podcasts, because if they insert a commercial, it's like the person's talking, and then all of a sudden this commercial just starts out of the blue. So whenever I insert things, I always wait for a second or two. Like I always count it out, you know, like one, one thousand, and then I'll have the next thing start. Because I think your brain needs to like switch, like, oh, we're going into a commercial now. Oh, we're going back to the show now. So that's disappointing to hear that because I don't want music to start playing like that.

Jay Franze:

Anywho, Brooke Innate. We listen every Sunday while making breakfast. This show has become part of our routine. A little news, a little talk, and a whole lot of personality. Thanks for being the soundtrack to our marriage.

Tiffany Mason:

Aw, what an honor.

Jay Franze:

I think that's probably the best comment we've ever had.

Tiffany Mason:

I think so too.

Jay Franze:

Big Rig Benny. Big Rig Benny.

Tiffany Mason:

That's awesome.

Jay Franze:

Okay. Jay, brother, comma. Jay, brother.

Tiffany Mason:

You can just hear him on the CD radio.

Jay Franze:

I've hauled freight through 33 states, and your show is the only thing that can keep my eyes open at 3 30 a.m. And Tiffany, oh, your laugh makes miles feel shorter.

Tiffany Mason:

That's awesome.

Jay Franze:

Y'all keep the rubber side down. Keep the news coming. That's awesome.

Tiffany Mason:

You know, it's really a redemption story, you guys, because I was made fun of so much in high school for my laugh. Literally made fun of. I had friends, I wasn't being bullied necessarily, but people would always pick on me for my laugh. So it is really refreshing that in my adult life, y'all love it.

Jay Franze:

Riley. Riley says, look. Look.

Tiffany Mason:

What am I looking for?

Jay Franze:

I don't know, but he means it though. I assume it's a he. Could be a she. But Riley says, look, look. Can we talk about how your last guest casually mentioned vintage Neumann's like it was no big deal?

Tiffany Mason:

Vintage what?

Jay Franze:

Neumann's microphone. Oh. German microphone. Considered one of the best in the world.

Tiffany Mason:

Whoa.

Jay Franze:

Jay, please do a whole episode just on microphones. So there you go. Vintage Neumann. I do like Neumann microphones. Oh wow. No, there's different flavors of Neumann microphones. The most common is the Neumann U87, which is heard on thousands of records. It's been one of the most common microphones forever. But then Neumann has a whole bunch of tube microphones and other microphones. It's even the microphone that Howard Stern chooses to use on his radio show.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh wow.

Jay Franze:

Even though it is a condenser microphone versus a dynamic microphone. Alright, here we go. Mama Joe from Bowling Green.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, dang, Mama Joe.

Jay Franze:

Mama Joe. It says from Bowling Green. I'm not giving away anything I shouldn't be. Her handle says Mama Green.

Tiffany Mason:

We don't really put it past you either way, Jay.

Jay Franze:

Mama Joe from Bowling Green. Okay, I won't tell you her address. I won't tell you that it's 835. I won't say that it's Main Street. I just won't do that, I promise. She says, I may be 76, but I still bop.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, I wanna beep up with you, baby. All nice long, Mama Joe.

Jay Franze:

Tiffany, honey, you remind me of my granddaughter. Bright, sharp, and not afraid to speak up. Jay, you're a good boy. Your wife is a lucky woman.

Tiffany Mason:

Aww. Thanks, Mama Joe.

Jay Franze:

You've just become the official grandmother of the show.

Tiffany Mason:

I think so. Mama Joe.

Jay Franze:

Wanna do more? Oh, we gotta do more. I see a couple on here on read.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay.

Jay Franze:

Chops says, here's the deal. Half of these new acts can't sing live. Tiffany, keep roasting the posers. It's good for the industry. All right. See now I don't mind your name being brought up in that scenario. Right. That made sense. Lola from Knoxville. Oh, I I can't say that. Sorry. She's not from Knoxville because she's only 15 years old.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh gosh.

Jay Franze:

She's not from Knoxville at all. She's from What's her date of birth? I don't know. It says Lola and then does one of these little parentheses things and says 15. Yeah. So okay. She says, oh my god, Tiffany. All in caps. Oh my god, Tiffany with two excited marks. I say excited marks because that's what Lucy used to call them in school.

Tiffany Mason:

That's cute.

Jay Franze:

You are literally my favorite person on any show.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh my gosh.

Jay Franze:

Jay, you're cool too, but I relate to Tiffany. I listen while I'm doing my homework and it makes algebra ten times less painful.

Tiffany Mason:

It makes sense that my fan base is 15.

Jay Franze:

Yeah, it does. All right. Should we end there? That seems like a good one. We can come back. Come back next time. Thanks, Lola. I appreciate it. That was cool. See, that was worth doing. That was fun. All right, Miss Tiffany, what do you got going on?

Tiffany Mason:

Well, I think first of all, I would like to tell the crew members we will be live next Tuesday because something very exciting is happening on Thursday.

Jay Franze:

And they're making it our show typically runs on Wednesday.

Tiffany Mason:

Right, but there's some prep. There's some prep, and I may be having a house full. That makes me. I was thinking with this laugh that everybody enjoys so much. Oh, dick. The people trying to sleep next door to me may not be enjoying the laugh very much.

Jay Franze:

The ones that have to listen to it all the time.

Tiffany Mason:

They love me for it, though. So yes, so we will be live next Tuesday at 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Normal time, different day. One day early. We're not gonna charge for that content coming out early either. So it's fine.

Jay Franze:

It's not part of the premium content.

Tiffany Mason:

And then tomorrow, Memories with a beat, there's a new episode. And we are talking about Even the Losers by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Jay Franze:

You know, they get lucky sometimes.

Tiffany Mason:

Yes, they do get lucky sometimes. And then finally, you guys. Okay. Remember, I did Boot Scoot and Bourbon. I met Stephen Quinn and his family, and I became an instant fan. Then he was performing in Florida near me, and I was gonna go and I got strep throat. Then the next time he was down here and he was performing, I was gonna go and I went to the hospital instead. Excuses, excuse. I know, excuses, excuses. So this Sunday he's performing close to me again, and so I'm gonna uh jet out on Hannah's flag football a little early. Yeah, yeah. Your daughter catch it and her new activity. Well, I've been at all.

Jay Franze:

You're just gonna bail.

Tiffany Mason:

I've been at all of her games, I've been a good mama, but I also think it's important to set example for our children, and like it's good to have them be a priority, but also know the world does not revolve around them. So it's okay if I go and watch her first full game and half of her second game and then go watch Steven. Good to fill your cup too. So you stay a good parent, good mama? Jay, what are you doing? What is new? What have you been up to? Did you go last weekend? Who was gonna be in town? Oh, Chase Matthew. Yep.

Jay Franze:

I did not go. We had too many family things going on. Speaking of those damn family members.

Tiffany Mason:

I know.

Jay Franze:

You know, I put my family first. I know. I know you don't always do that.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay, everybody put their boots on and skin thick. Who went and met Jason Bottom on his anniversary? It was just the wife.

Jay Franze:

Yes, fine. Yes. No, I didn't. I did my daughter's homecoming one Friday, which was nice. And I did, I don't know, I don't even know what the hell we did. It was something, but I didn't I didn't go to a show, I'll tell you that much. All right, this week again at Laurie's Roadhouse. I like to go to Laurie's Roadhouse. I'm going to try to be there. There's two shows this week. There's one that I planned on seeing on Saturday. Which is Hotel California. A salute to the Eagles.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay.

Jay Franze:

So Laurie's Roadhouse Saturday. However, on Friday, there is Cory Hooker and the Cadillac Preachers.

Tiffany Mason:

Okay.

Jay Franze:

Don't know who they are, but I want to go check them out.

Tiffany Mason:

What kind of music is it?

Jay Franze:

I'm going gas country.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, okay.

Jay Franze:

It's Laurie's Roadhouse. It's typically 95% country music.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, got it. Okay.

Jay Franze:

I mean, they do they do have salsa night.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh.

Jay Franze:

They have line dancing night and they have salsa night.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh man, I'd be there for line dancing night. I gotta find somewhere here in Florida. I mean, there's some lady and she's doing pop-ups, like, you know, one-offs here and there. I need a regular gig. You know what I'm saying?

Jay Franze:

I hear ya. I hear ya. Yeah. Either way, I don't know who Cory Hooker and the Cadillac Preachers are, but I would like to see them. I would probably like to see them more than Hotel California.

Tiffany Mason:

Oh, wow.

Jay Franze:

So we will see how that goes. We will see if the wife will allow me to leave the family long enough to go see a show and do something that I would enjoy.

Tiffany Mason:

See if you get permission.

Jay Franze:

See if I can get permission. Because the Lord knows she won't go with me. Now to be fair. To be fair, we have three children. We do have three children. Oldest one is old enough to babysit. That's the whole reason why he had three, right?

Tiffany Mason:

Right. One's a babysitter, one's the baby. Well, she's there for her atmosphere.

Jay Franze:

That poor girl, I'll tell you, that girl is nuts.

Tiffany Mason:

I love her.

Jay Franze:

She is absolutely nuts.

Tiffany Mason:

I love her.

Jay Franze:

All right. Shall we crash it?

Tiffany Mason:

Let's do it.

Jay Franze:

We shall crash it. All right, folks. Well, we have done it. We have reached the top of the hour. We're doing pretty good. Haven't quite hit hour number two, but we're there, which does mean we have reached the end of the show. If you've enjoyed the show, please tell a friend, Miss Tiffany, if you have not.

Tiffany Mason:

Tell two.

Jay Franze:

Tell two. You can reach out to both of us over at jfranzy.com, where we'd be happy to keep this conversation going or any other. You can also find our socials and anything else you need over at jfranzie.com. Miss Tiffany, my friend, do you have any final words for us?

Tiffany Mason:

Always. It is always a good night when we get to spend time with you, our crew members. Thank you for listening. Take care, and we will see you next Tuesday.

Jay Franze:

All right, folks.

Tony Scott:
